Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, I am a mother of three, aunt to numerous nieces and nephews, and sibling to twelve. I obtained my LPN from Central Georgia Technical College in 2008 and am currently pursuing my Registered Nurse Licensing at Wayne County Community College, aiming to specialize in wound care ostomy nursing.
My own difficulties and struggles as an ostomate inspired the creation of S.T.O.M.A. In 2012 I was diagnosed with stage three colorectal cancer after several years of misdiagnosis. Despite aggressively attacking my rectal tumor, it was too late to save my rectum, I needed a permanent colostomy. Although acclimating to this new lifestyle was challenging, I prayed for strength and perseverance along the way.
(Next, I prayed and asked God how can I help ostomates, what can I do? )
" He answered", In 2015 while traveling with my family. A weekend trip turned into a weeklong struggle when my family and I got stuck in a snowstorm. The storm prevented me from going home, and I was also severely low on ostomy supplies. supplies, with no access to the supplies I desperately needed, my ,sister and I had to keep going back and forth between emergency rooms in an attempt to get enough supplies to last us. I vowed that no one in the ostomy community should ever have to go without the supplies they need, no matter what the situation, under any circumstances after going through such a vulnerable and helpless experience.
(This is how I help. I have turned my test into a testimony).
My experience led to the founding of S.T.O.M.A. (Strength Through Ostomy Medical Assistance) in May 2015. My mission is to assist those living with bowel or urinary diversions; ensuring support, education and access to ostomy supplies regardless of financial or insurance-related challenges.
I aim to "Bridge the Gap from Hospital to Home" by providing critical resources and guidance to ostomates, their caregivers, and families as they transition into their life with an ostomy. By supplying transitional ostomy medical assistance, stoma serves as a symbol of unity for the ostomy community to help them sustain their life while transitioning.
